As Steve Would Say, "boom."

I didn't think it would happen this fast. It helped that Microsoft is in a free-fall.

Steve Jobs Weighs in on Google’s VP8 Codec | Mac|Life

Media_httpwwwmaclifec_obxur

It seems it's apparent that Apple's playing a wait and see.

A few issues that need attention (that Google fanbois and Apple haters seem to ignore):

1. Quality. I've read that the quality of VP8's video isn't as good as H.264.
2. Patents. Google claims they have done their due diligence, but that's no guarantee. Indemnification could address this.
3. Performance. If decoding VP8 bleeds your battery dry, that may be enough for Android users since they're used to that (Android's multitasking), however, it would ruin the user experience.

Don’t cry for the workers at Foxconn

I’ve been interested in gadget manufacturing for a while now and, as I reported a few months ago, things are pretty bad but they’ve been worse. Now, however, we’re seeing clusters of suicides at Foxconn as well as an undercover “report” from Foxconn’s “Hell Factory.” I’m calling bull.

First, consider that Foxconn has 400,000 employees in Shenzhen alone. Cleveland, Ohio has 478,403 residents as of the 2000 census and I suspect that’s gone down. You’re not amazed by the number of suicides in Cleveland, right? It’s par for the course. People go nuts in Cleveland, even though they have a great meat market and the Cleveland Clinic is really nice. People don’t want to live, sometimes, right?

As bad as that factory might be, I'd expect the suicide rate to be higher in Cleveland. After all, we're talking Cleveland. What more reason need there be?

(Of course, I admit my exposure to Cleveland is limited to Major League.)
